Martial Arts For You!

These days, martial arts are something that everyone should know.  With crime at an all-time high, knowing how to defend yourself is essential.  For children, martial arts can mean a lot of things.  Even though martial arts are great for adults to know and practice as well, it is also a great way for children to stay in shape and learn how to defend themselves from attackers.

Martial arts can teach children how to defend themselves, but most importantly it will also teach them self-control and self-confidence.  If your child has a bad temper or low self-esteem, learning a martial art can help them get back on the right path.  Martial arts will help children with life in general – which will take them a lot farther in life.

The first thing you will need to do when getting your child involved in martial arts is pick a style that they will enjoy.  With several different styles to choose from, it can be a very difficult choice to make.  Among the most popular for children are Taekwon-Do, Karate, Judo, Muay Thai, and Jiu-Jitsu.  When making the decision, you should go by what your child has interests in. Is the child showing interest in learning to strike (Standup), or grappling and submission; or all of the above?

Once you have a style in mind, you’ll need to start checking out the local martial arts centers and dojangs.  If you live in a big city, you’ll have a lot more to choose from than those who live in smaller areas or rural towns.  Those who live in smaller towns or rural areas may be very limited on the choices available for themselves and their children.

Rural and smaller towns are limited in choice, although what they offer is normally among the best styles of martial arts.  The instructors are certified black belts; if lucky you’ll have a high-level black belt instructor, with the highest ranked students helping them instruct classes.  Most of the time, you will find beginner classes small in attendance, this is GREAT for the student, simply because the instructor can dedicate more time to each student the basic skill(s) to build a strong foundation, in addition to improving their skillset and focus on their weakest areas.

When you decide to enroll your child in martial arts, you should always check out the dojang, and see if they offer some free trial classes or if there is a monthly promotion.  You don’t want your child to be in a class that isn’t goal focused, nor do you want them to have a teacher who doesn’t know what he/she is teaching, and every class seems to be a daycare. The environment is also important, as you want to be sure that the dojang and equipment are clean, and that everything is up to the latest and greatest standards.

Even though a martial art may be beneficial to your child, it won’t do them any good unless the facilities and the instructors are good.  You want to make sure you get the best available instruction offered to you, which is why it always pays to look around.  If you look at all your available choices, you’ll normally be able to find the best for both you and your child.

When it comes to children and their future, as a parent myself; I want what is best for them! A martial art that will challenge them mentally, physically, and spiritually. Martial arts are a great way for them to learn discipline, work on their self-confidence and build the “CAN DO” attitude.  Martial arts can help them improve in many different areas, not just self-defense.  A martial art can help a child develop a lot of essential areas, including self-control, respect and responsibility.  The longer a child studies a martial art, the more goal oriented and responsible they will become.  Martial arts are a great investment for parents and children – which is why they are so popular!

In conclusion, whatever discipline or style of martial arts you decide to do, make sure it meets your overall criteria. Know your “why” and understand the goals you want to reach or lessons you want to learn; either for you or your child. Remember that every style is different. Every style has its pros and cons, BUT what makes any style so unique and beneficial is the hard work the students put on the mat. That is what makes an AWESOME, well-disciplined martial artist!

Teaching Youth Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is a trait that should be developed at an early age. It is critical in our society because it abounds with complex activities, stresses, and challenges. If you want to become a successful adult, you must be able to develop self-discipline as early as your teenage years. What are some of the activities that teach youth self-discipline?

A lot of people believe that it is very hard to teach old dogs new tricks. This is true but there are still ways to teach the youth self-discipline. How can you say that a certain individual is disciplined? Well, that is easy to tell and very good examples are children. Observe kids when parents or caregivers are not around. Well-disciplined children will still act in a reflective and thoughtful manner even without the presence of parents or caregiver.

When you finally reach your teenage years, more is expected from you by the people who surround you, even your family. You must be able to show others that you are self-disciplined and that you are responsible for your actions.

If you’re a member of a certain youth group, you can participate in the group activities. If you find yourself unaccepted by other peers, your best option is to join a youth group. The youth group will not say no to you, and they will welcome you with open arms. But to stay in the group, you must let the group members help you with your problems.

You must admit to yourself that you lack self-discipline because that is the only time that they can help you. You must be willing to help yourself so that the efforts of the group will not be wasted. Some of the activities prepared by the youth group can teach the members self-discipline. You must take an active part in these activities so that you can see some improvements.

Group games are usually played by the group. It’s okay to have some fun and play kids games occasionally. It can help all the members unwind and relax. Through kids’ games, the members will learn to control themselves. If you want to be accepted in the group, try your best not to be counterproductive. Negative perceptions often result to uncontrolled behavior, aggressiveness, and anger. You must learn to control yourself, and various youth games and sports can help a lot.

Sports games can test the self-discipline of youth group members. As a disciplined individual, you will not do anything that can cause misunderstandings or quarrels. You will not cheat just to win. You will be honest and follow directions.

In conclusion, if you cannot find a group that can accept your weaknesses, and assist you to become better; then it is time that you start looking for a youth group or a sports team that will allow you to work as a team, and in turn they will help you be your best version . Youth groups are widespread nowadays and it’s all up to you to find them. Make sure that you choose a youth group or sport that you really like so that you will not feel any pressure in attending their activities. You can even ask for your parent’s support. That way, they will know what you’re doing, and will be eager to see your progress. Being a member in the group will help you become a better person!

It helps everyone understand how to cope with today’s issue and knowing that we are all in this together” which is why Victor Teran wrote the book.

“Bunk the Chipmunk’s Quarantine Story is a children’s poem that tells the story of a friendly chipmunk quarantined at home during the current pandemic, and gives advice on how to navigate this quarantine successfully to be happy, do well in school, and find happiness even during this stressful and confusing time. This is a beautiful poem for younger children. With its short and rhyming cadence, it can be easily followed by your child”.

Victor Teran gives readers insight into keeping clean, being creative and activities while quarantine. The book helps readers understand why it is important to wash hands, and covering our mouths when sneezing; whether they are toddlers or adults. The book has already received some great reviews from industry leaders. “ The author’s mastery of the rhyming lyrics will certainly appeal to children – and to the parents who are reading this book out loud to them. This book can be a wonderful tool for parents to discuss a child’s emotions about the difficulties of necessary changes in their daily lives. While some information may have changed in the past few months, such as the virus disappearing in the spring, this provides an opportunity for more discussion.
